Cadets at Texas A&M Maritime Academy participate in one of three programs: U.S. Coast Guard License Program, Navy Reserve Officer Training Corps (NROTC), and Drill & Ceremonies. Cadets in the License Program may choose to participate in the Strategic Sealift Midshipman Program (SSMP) and seek a reserve commission into the U.S. Navy. These cadets are also eligible for a stipend of up to $64,000 from the Maritime Administration.
The Texas A&M Maritime Academy is open to all students located on the Galveston Campus, regardless of academic program. Students in the U.S. Coast Guard License Program must be enrolled in one of the following degree programs:
· B.S. Marine Transportation (Unlimited Third Mate license)
· B.S. Marine Biology (Unlimited Third Mate license)
· B.S. Marine Sciences (Unlimited Third Mate license)
· Any graduate degree (Unlimited Third Mate license)
· B.S. Marine Engineering Technology (Unlimited Third Assistant Engineer license)
The Corps of Cadets is a leadership development program with a specific focus on the maritime industry. It is a student-led, regimented organization that provides the structure, discipline, and training necessary to prepare cadets for high-responsibility roles as licensed officers in the U.S. Merchant Marine or as commissioned officers in the U.S. Armed Forces. While it shares traditions and a command structure with the larger Corps in College Station, its primary mission is to meet the U.S. Coast Guard requirements for maritime licensing, emphasizing hands-on seamanship, engineering operations, and shipboard management.
Training at Sea
Through the Texas A&M Maritime Academy program, deck and engine license cadets must fulfill academic and sea service requirements aboard vessels before they graduate. This training is provided during summer sea term journeys after freshman, sophomore and junior years. Cadets travel around the world gaining vital hands-on experience in seamanship, ship operations, and other maritime skills.
